When most people hear “branding,” they think logos, fonts, color palettes, or a pretty website.
But here’s the truth: none of that is your brand.
Those are just the visuals.
The real brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. And if you’re trying to build a serious business—whether it’s a course, agency, product, or even a YouTube channel—that’s what actually drives word-of-mouth, loyalty, and long-term leverage.
Let’s simplify it:
- Marketing is what you say about yourself.
- Branding is what others say about you when you’re not around.
Think about that last part for a second.
Why do people talk about someone when they’re not around?
It’s because they feel something about them. Jealousy. Admiration. Confusion. Inspiration.
Same goes for your business.
If people feel something strong enough to bring you up when you're not present—good or bad—your brand is working.
Ever been in a room where someone leaves and immediately the conversation turns to them?
That’s exactly what happens with strong personal and business brands.
You don’t need to have gone viral. You don’t need a blue checkmark.
You just need to represent something people remember.
For example, I’ve gotten countless messages like:
“Bro, I don’t even trade... but I’m about to buy your course. It’s you. I f**k with what you stand for.”
None of my marketing says “buy this if you don’t know what trading is.”
But that’s the brand speaking, not the campaign. People connect with the energy and message I put into the world. That’s how real businesses grow quietly and consistently.
Here’s the power move: when you listen to what people say about you, you can start to build inside of that.
You can design content, products, and messaging that leans into the exact reputation you’ve already earned.
For example:
- If you’re known for being humble and wise, lean into that in your content.
- If you’re known for being bold and direct, embrace the edge. Don’t tone it down, double down.
You’re no longer just running ads or making posts—you’re reinforcing a brand story people already tell.
And when that happens, they’ll start telling more people for you.
Here’s a simple framework to start using:
1. Ask 3-5 customers or followers what they think of you.
→ Look for patterns in the language they use.
2. Notice what people say in DMs or comments when they compliment you.
→ That’s usually the real brand message.
3. Create content and offers that reinforce that message.
→ You’re building inside their story, not forcing your own.
This works whether you’re a solo creator or running a startup.
Most people focus on what to say.
But if you understand what people are already saying… you don’t have to shout.
Branding is your business whispering into rooms you’ve never entered.
Your only job is to make sure it’s saying the right thing.
